This festival is commemorated to celebrate the end of a successful harvest season. One of the greatest celebrations in Cambodia takes place throughout which people of Khmer ancestry take a full three days off from work and go home to commemorate the conclusion of the customary harvesting season. It is a period when farm owners, who have worked all year in their fields to collect food, enjoy some well-deserved downtime. On this day, the Khmer congregation comes together to undertake numerous purifying rituals, attend their temples, and have fun with old-fashioned activities.
This day is also regarded as the ancestor’s day and is dedicated to remembering and acknowledging the loved ones that passed away. The Cambodians honour all seven generations of their predecessors on Pchum Ben, also referred to as the "Hungry Ghosts Festival" and the "Festival Of The Dead," which means "to assemble a sphere of food."
The first day of this celebration is thought to be when the orifice of the underworld opens and all the spirits, some of whom are people's relatives, are allowed out. In the pagodas, a food-offering ceremony is performed as part of the ceremony in the hope that the virtues gained by feeding the monks will atone for the misdeeds of the forebears. This celebration is well-liked in Cambodia.
